You Are Your Own Oasis

You Are Your Own Oasis

As an individual, you are a testament to the power of one. You are one. You are the most important one to yourself, as an individual. What can each of us do to contribute to the whole? I think the greatest, most insidious adversary to ourselves and one another is when we feel a lack of power. When that happens, apathy sets in and with it feelings of, "What does it matter? I don't matter," can take over. We all matter. Each one of us matters in a positive way and a negative way. We each leave behind a footprint. We each have a ripple effect in what we do. For every action, there's a reaction. With each negative there is a greater negative effect. With each positive, there is a greater positive effect.

For example, when we begin Monday morning on a sour note, we tend to keep these notes floating around us in a negative symphony. When we begin Monday on a hopeful, upbeat note we tend to keep this music playing in our heads.  What type of music do you enjoy listening to? Flat, sour notes? Upbeat, lifting notes? You are the maestro.  The creator of the notes to your own song.

Yes, there will be others, situations in your life that could bring you down and end up sour. There are just as many, if not more that lead you up the hill, towards a finer place to be. None of us get out of life unscathed. It is a choice, our decision to make on the thoughts we put in our heads and the feelings we create within ourselves with these creations.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Just think differently and you will feel differently. Yet, for some of us this simple sentence can irk us and we plummet into a rut of self-destruction. We do feel helpless. We do think that we don’t matter. How did we get to this place once more? Are we conditioned to believe we don’t matter? Yes and no. It depends on what we choose to believe. We are always empowered. We always know the way home, so to speak. The home being the heart.

We may choose to sabotage ourselves out of conditioning we don’t see a way around. Where does this come from? We truly are our own creator. When do we decide to give ourselves a break? When do we forgive ourselves for the sins we have trespassed against ourselves? Are they really sins, or has it been conditioning we just didn’t understand until this instant? Can we let go? When the thought that leads us comes back around to lead us once more, can we say simply, “I do or don’t want to follow you any longer?”

Does this mean we are crazy or sane? Doesn’t everyone talk to themselves? Yes. We all have inner dialogue. Are we hungry, tired, influenced by drugs, heartache, fear? Are we well-fed, alert, full of hope and deep compassion for ourselves and others? No matter the influence we can hear that still , calm voice within leading us from within. It is a possibility. Reach for it. Hold onto it. It is always there. When we despair we can find this peaceful place within. A place we have labeled many ways. Call it heart, soul, or a spiritual oasis. It is there and will never leave, only with our choice does it falter. We are never alone, and never as powerful as when we allow ourselves this intuitive space within each one of us. You are your own oasis.
